Creating and editing sheets

Quickly build sheets and visualizations in edit mode.

Click Edit sheets to start building sheets in an app. The edit mode interface helps you quickly create charts and lay them out in a sheet. With edit mode's smart grid, you can quickly place new visualizations beside or below a chart and click and drag them into their final positions. You can easily create filters in your visualizations, limiting the data that displays in the charts.

Your sheets are private until you make them public. For more information, see Granting access to sheets, sheet groups, bookmarks, and stories.

Advanced sheet creation options are available from Advanced options. Advanced options contains additional properties and settings not available in the standard edit mode. For information about working with the advanced edit mode, see Working with advanced options.

Creating visualizations

New sheets automatically include a visualization. You can add visualizations in the grid by clicking to the right or bottom of a row to add a visualization there.

By default, new visualizations will be set to the autochart visualization type. The autochart helps you quickly build charts based on the fields you add to Properties. You can switch between different visualizations under Visualization. You can then optionally add filters and adjust the presentation settings of your visualizations.

Information note

Map charts require using advanced properties that are the same as their properties in Advanced options. Map charts do not have access to filters or presentation settings in the standard edit mode.

Information note

Some visualizations can only be added in the advanced edit mode:

  • Button

  • Container

  • Text & Image

  • Custom objects, such as extensions from the Dashboard bundle or Visualization bundle.

You can modify them in the standard edit mode, but they will have the same properties as they do in the advanced edit mode. Some will support filters, however.

  1. If this is a new sheet, select the default visualization.

Otherwise, click Add item to the right or below of a visualization to add the new visualization there.

  2. Select a visualization type.

If you are unsure what kind of visualization to use, select Autochart. Autochart will pick the best visualization for the data you add.

You can switch between visualizations types as you create a visualization. This is useful if you want to view different options for presenting your data.

  3. Drag and drop fields or master items from Assets under Data. Alternatively, click Add and then select them from the list.

If you want to build a dimension or measure using an expression, in the visualization in the sheet, click Add dimension or Add measure and then click Open expression editor. If you want to add additional expressions, click Advanced options and add them under Data in the properties panel.

  4. Optionally, to add filters:

    1. Drag and drop fields under Filter to use as filters in the visualization.

    2. Select the filter type and set any additional filter parameters.

For more information about filters, see Applying filters to visualizations.

  5. Optionally, to change how the chart is sorted, in Sorting select By measure or By dimension and the sort order.

    For more information, see Sorting.

  6. Optionally, to change colors used by the chart, in Color, select Custom and choose the color option for the chart.

The following coloring options are available:

    • Single color: Select a single color to be used in the visualization.

    • Multicolored: Select to use different colors for the different measures in a visualization.

    • By dimension: Select to color the chart by dimension values.

Additional color options are available in Advanced properties. For more information, see Coloring a visualization.

For more information on color settings, see Color.

  7. Optionally, in Labels, add a title, subtitle, or footnote to the visualization.

For more information on label settings, see Labels.

  8. Optionally, for bar charts, combo charts, pie charts, and donut charts, in Styling, set additional chart styling.

For more information on styling settings, see Styling.

  9. Optionally, in Tooltip, add a custom title and description to the tooltips in the visualization.

Additional custom tooltip options are available in Advanced properties.

For more information on tooltip options, see Tooltip.

  10. Optionally, in Axis, adjust the orientation, position, and scale of the axes.

Axis is available in the following charts:

    • Bar charts

    • Scatter plot

    • Waterfall chart

    • Box plot

    • Distribution plot

    • Bullet chart

    • Histogram

For more information on axis options, see Axis.

Once you have created your visualization, you can optionally turn on Advanced options to switch to the advanced edit mode for additional properties.

Resizing visualizations

You can resize visualizations in their row. If you need to change how much vertical space visualizations take up, turn on Advanced options.

  • Click on the side of a visualization and drag it to resize it in the row.

Deleting visualizations

  • Right-click a visualization and select Delete.

Limitations

Edit mode for sheets has the following limitations:

  • The standard edit mode does not support touch devices. If your device is touch-only, turn on Advanced options.

  • If settings have been made in Presentation for an autochart and the autochart refreshes, such as by changing the fields used in the autochart, the presentation settings will be erased.

  • If settings have been made on a map chart and you switch it to another visualization, the settings will be reset.

  • Boxplots do not support filters.
